AI Unleashed: Why such a big Jump in 2023
January 3, 2024
2023 was the year when AI transformed from being akin to rocket science to becoming a mainstream tool. It evolved into a technology accessible not only to data scientists but almost everyone. Have you ever pondered why such a monumental leap occurred, particularly in 2023?
In this article, I aim to explore the reasons behind this leap from a unique angle – one that ties it to our evolving behaviors which catalyzed this major shift. Certainly, there are numerous other factors, such as increased accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and technical feasibility. You’ll find thousands of articles online elucidating these aspects.
Let me preface with a disclaimer: this article targets a general audience whose AI journey commenced in 2023, and not those already versed in the subject. My insights are based on personal observations and interpretations and do not represent the views of any organization I am affiliated with.
In my opinion, the momentum began with the release of ChatGPT 3.5, which became accessible to everyone, setting off a cascading effect. People began interacting with the tool, amazed by its seemingly boundless potential. Many records broken with the increased number of users in such short time frame. And the snowball start to run down the hill from that moment on. Yet, there was another critical factor at play, our behavioral patterns. As many of you will acknowledge, our attention spans have drastically shortened, largely due to social media platforms. The consumption of short-form content like ‘stories’ and ‘reels’ has significantly changed our digital engagement habits. Now, our focus on any digital content lasts between 10 to 30 seconds.
This means if you find what you’re looking for in the first 10 to 30 seconds, you remain engaged; otherwise, you quickly move on, swipe up, down, left or right.
See how it is linked to AI? GPT like tools offer precise, relevant information within this crucial time frame, encouraging continued engagement. Users can go deeper, rephrase questions, or explore different aspects of a topic. This responsiveness, combined with other enabling factors, propelled its success in 2023. It seems our behavioral patterns have gradually evolved to favor such interactions. While I’m not aware of any scientific research that influenced this user interface design, in my opinion, this aspect was pivotal.
As most would agree, technology development is one thing, but its widespread adoption hinges on how well it resonates with user habits and preferences.
